Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel project reaches an exciting milestone in construction

Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel project has reached an exciting milestone in construction with the removal of acoustic sheds at the Town Hall and Anzac station sites.

The acoustic sheds were originally constructed in 2019 to minimise noise, light and  dust during station box excavation and 24-hour tunnelling operations. During tunnelling, the Anzac shed housed inbuilt gantry cranes that were used to assemble the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and move concrete segments – used to line the tunnel – from the surface to the tunnel underground.

With the completion of 24-hour tunnelling, the gantry cranes are no longer required, and these sheds are being removed, allowing for the next stage of works to commence.  For Anzac station, works will commence on the new tram/train interchange that is being constructed on St Kilda Road. This new station entrance, along with the new tram platform and entrance canopy will begin to take shape in 2022.  For Town Hall station, two 50m high cranes will be installed over the Swanston Street footpath between Collins and Flinders Lane which will remove the acoustic shed at by mid-2022 and then bring materials onto site for the fit out of the station’s City Square entrance.

Works will continue underground on the station platform and fit out of the new rail tunnels.
